In order to retain users, you have to nail that first experience. But new users will quickly become more sophisticated and  want to do more. Weve found that our MindMeister users soon want to embellish their mind maps, by: adding images presenting their content to others sharing their content online creating links between their content. Maybe they like your software so much that theyll find use cases that push your interface to its very limits. This is a good problem to have, no doubt, but still a challenge we need to solve. It also presents  probably the hardest question for a software designer: How can I design software that meets the user with functionality at exactly the right moment in their customer journey? This remains one of the biggest challenges for me personally: when you’re working on an app for more than a decade, the temptation can arise to complicate things â€" and potentially  overcomplicate them. Advanced Mode isnt the answer One thing I do know is that software with different modes or states, like the “Advanced” or “Editing Mode” that you find in some apps, are not the answer. In my previous job, I had to help users with software systems. My first question was always: Please tell me what mode your system is in? People never knew the answer to that â€" they always needed to search for the answer at length, guided by more probing questions from me. We launched MindMeister in 2006 and haven’t stopped  perfecting our interface ever since. In his bestselling book Hooked, entrepreneur and design expert Nir Eyal tries to explain how some companies create products that you just can’t put down. The golden standard are of course products like Facebook, which  studies have proven our brain wants to check every 31 seconds. What is it that makes you fall in love with these products? One of the main attractions of truly “habit-forming” products, Eyal concludes, is that they reward the actions they trigger. Rewards can be anything. The only thing really required is that your user experiences a small, almost imperceptible boost of satisfaction. Imagine the feeling you get when you finish assembling a piece of IKEA furniture. For example, Eyal  points out that LinkedIn provides users with reward when they input more details about themselves into the professional networking platform. A graphic pops up that illustrates how close to complete your profile is, building incentive in users to finish what they’ve started. When you’ve provided enough information, LinkedIn lets you know that your profile has reached “All-Star” status. Eyal says that the graphic increases the likelihood of users opening a premium account and thus launching into the investment phase.   Knowing your products reward will allow you to reduce the time your user needs to get that very first boost and reducing your time to wow will increase the likelihood of bringing the user back a second time. 4. Are You Future Proof? Finally, theres the question: How will we survive the onslaught of new technologies that launch every day? Augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence (the list goes on …) will change how users interact with content: they’ll be able to verbally access information (no more UI required!) and experience it in 3D (UI everywhere around you!). One main difference will be that the workspace will include the entire field of vision rather than a 24-inch slice of it. But that will probably be compensated partly by the fact that hand gestures aren’t as granular as the pointer of a mouse. On March 23, 2010 President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA); this date is when the growing debate began. The Affordable Care Act is also commonly known as Obamacare. A large issue between the opposing sides is the future of small business under this bill. Holland discusses how people with an income over a certain amount will be having a higher tax rate, rather than the lower-than-average rate they have now. This bill, similarly to the article by LOLGOP on eclectablog.com speaks to the idea that insurers can no longer charge women higher than men. Those with an income lower than a certain mark will be getting tax credits and subsidies to help pay for their insurance, is another point of Holland’s in this article. The largest pro-Obamacare points include: the newly regulated equality between insurers charging men and  women the same price, the raising or lowering of taxes depending on income, and how much more accessible healthcare is going to be with this bill. Many of the controversies between the sides seem to cancel each other out, where one side says something, and the other says something that directly refutes it. Media Awareness The case that I decided to focus on is an older abuse case, but it has recently been resolved in the courts. It is a child abuse case involving James and Bonnie Zeleski. They were both charged with abusing their infant daughter. The child was brought to the hospital with a fracture in each leg, a fracture in each arm, a thigh fracture, three broken ribs, a ripped esophagus, pneumonia, malnourished and several other cuts and bruises. The girl was transferred to an Omaha hospital. The father, James, was charged on June 3, 1998 with Class 4 Felony Child Abuse. His wife, Bonnie, was later charged and convicted of a Class 3 Felony. James was sentenced to three years probation and six months in jail. His wife was sentenced to 15 to 18 months in prison. I think that this case was fairly portrayed by the media. I know at the time, there were several letters to the editor and opinion printed on the subject, but the Grand Island Independent seemed to be fair and stick to the facts. It was a horrible crime and I think they did a good job being unbiased. I think that it is a good idea to publicize crimes like this. From my other studies, I have learned that the informal sanctions, public humiliation and shame, are far more effective than the formal sanctions in preventing crime. When people who are having a hard time dealing with being a parent see something like this in the media, they may stop to think about their actions. A good idea would be to run several articles on where parents can go to for help. The combination of the two, may help prevent this from happening to another child. As a mother I have a definite interest in this crime. I cannot even begin to understand how anyone could do something like that to someone so helpless. I am also interested in this case from the legal perspective and how the case was resolved in the court system. I personally think that the sentencing was very lenient. I think this is a good activity. I studied journalism for a while and I am very aware of how the media can distort a situation. I think as a human service worker it is very important to know what is going on and how the situations are being resolved. Anytime situations like this can be brought to public attention I think it can help. Just getting one person to think about their actions possibly save the life of a child. Over six thousand years ago, the waters of these rivers provided the lifeblood that allowed the formation of farming settlements. These grew into villages and then cities. Geography of the Fertile Crescent TAKING NOTES A desert climate dominates the landscape between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea in Southwest Asia. Yet within this dry region lies an arc of land that provided some of the best farming in Southwest Asia. The region’s curved shape and the richness of its land led scholars to call it the Fertile Crescent. It includes the lands facing the Mediterranean Sea and a plain that became known as Mesopotamia (MEHS†¢uh†¢puh†¢TAY†¢mee†¢uh). The word in Greek means â€Å"land between the rivers.† The rivers framing Mesopotamia are the Tigris (TY†¢grihs) and Euphrates (yoo†¢FRAY†¢teez). They flow southeastward to the Persian Gulf. (See the map on page 30.) The Tigris and Euphrates rivers flooded Mesopotamia at least once a year. As the floodwater receded, it left a thick bed of mud called silt. Farmers planted grain in this rich, new soil and irrigated the fields with river water. The results were large quantities of wheat and barley at harvest time. The surpluses from their harvests allowed villages to grow. Identifying Problems and Solutions Use a chart to identify Sumer’s environmental problems and their solutions. Problems Solutions Environmental Challenges People first began to settle and farm the flat, swampy lands in southern Mesopotamia before 4500 B.C. Around 3300 B.C., the people called the Sumerians, whom you read about in Chapter 1, arrived on the scene. Good soil was the advantage that attracted these settlers. However, there were three disadvantages to their new environment. †¢ Unpredictable flooding combined with a period of little or no rain. The land sometimes became almost a desert. †¢ With no natural barriers for protection, a Sumerian village was nearly defenseless. †¢ The natural resources of Sumer were limited. Why do gas prices continually swell? Who owns the oil being drilled and pumped from all over the world? Oil is a non-renewable resource owned by oiling companies such as Exxon Mobile, Chevron, BP, and other name brand gas providers. The prices are skyrocketing because of supply and demand. The world supply of natural oil is being syphoned and used every day at an alarming rate. Oil companies have gotten and are still getting their more than fair share of money for providing these fuels. Texaco purchased Getty Oil in 1984 for 9.9 billion dollars. As you can see, big oil companies have more up their sleeves to make money other than oil. With th e push for new ways of powering our machinery with cleaner and more abundant resources, will these big businesses simply buy each other and other companies in order to make it through this trying time, or will they help pioneer technology through to the new age? We now know that oil companies resort to buying and creating smaller companies in order to keep making money even in difficult times. What if instead of buying container companies, making office equipment, attempting to buy circuses, and buying each other, these businesses created new companies to help fund, research, and develop cleaner, more abundant, or renewable energy technologies. It is evident that their main prerogative is making money. At the reservation counter, when her turn came, there was only one ticket left. Taking pity on a very old lady behind her in line, she offered her berth to the old lady and sent a telegram to her husband which arrived with a small error: â€Å"Shall be coming tomorrow, heavy rush in the train, ave birth to an old lady. † A Business Loan A businessman walked into a bank in San Francisco and asked for the loan officer. He told the officer that he is going to Europe on business for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000. The bank officer explained that the bank needed some kind of security for such a loan. So the businessman handed over the keys to a Rolls Royce parked on the street in front of the bank. Everything checked out, and the bank agreed to accept the car as collateral for the loan. A bank employee drove the Rolls into the bank’s underground garage and parked it there. Two weeks later, the businessman returned, repaid the $5,000 with interest, which came to $15. 41. The loan officer said, â€Å"We are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why would you bother to borrow $5,000? Some hours later, the second truck driver drove past the first one, who was still waiting on the freeway for help to come. Supermarket Encounter A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally, he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. â€Å"Pardon me,† she said, â€Å"I’m sorry if my sta ring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. However, as a long-time IT professional, both as an IT director and as a systems engineer, I can relate to the angst in the technology issues encumbered in this episode. Failure to deal with DNS issues (or other significant technology issues), particularly with the startup or renaming of a website, simply cannot happen. Technology, and especially web presence, has become too important for any successful organization to fail at today. The scene with the VP of Engineering’s issues and his concerns about hardware and software in advance of the initial launch due to funding problems is another illustration of this issue. If a startup wants to create a buzz to create capital and create a market for its product, then the technology cannot be underfunded, imperfect, and not properly responsive, as the likelihood that it will be successful decreases. This episode underpinned how poor my prior understanding of the funding â€Å"recruitment† process and stages is in starting up a corporation from scratch, and the inherent risks involved. From the recruitment of initial â€Å"angel† investors to securing venture capitalist groups to fund the development and growth of the startup during its non-earning years, it is an incredibly risky proposition. The episode shows all too well that while Earth Class Mail has an exceptional management team, loaded with experience, and an exceptional business concept, that there always are pitfalls at every turn for new startup. One week, a startup is turning investors away due to potential over-subscription, and the next they are scrambling for the next stage’s funding due to the loss of a major venture capitalist.
